MLB Will Comply With Senate's Request For Gambling Investigation

NEW YORK CITY (AP) - Big league Baseball states it will adhere to a Senate committee's demand for files detailing betting investigations.
Sens. Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee sent out a letter Monday to baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred asking for details by Dec. 5. The demand followed indictments of Cleveland pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz implicating them of taking kickbacks to rig pitches for bettors. Both have pleaded not guilty.
"We ´ re going to react fully and cooperatively and on time to the Senate inquiry," Manfred said Wednesday throughout a press conference at an owners meeting.
Two days after the indictments were unsealed on Nov. 9, MLB said its licensed gaming operators will top bets on private pitches at $200 and omit them from parlays.
"We think the steps we ´ ve taken in regards to restricting the size of these prop bets and restricting parlays off them is an actually, actually significant change that must decrease the reward for anybody to be included in an unsuitable method," Manfred stated.
He said it was prematurely to state whether MLB will take a stance on prediction markets, in which agreements are traded based upon real events such as game ratings.
"We ´ re aware of the issues, the different regulative structure, however not in a position where I desire to articulate openly a position on it," he said.
Manfred stated MLB's internal investigation into the Cleveland pitchers didn't have a timetable. Ortiz was put on paid leave on July 3 and Clase on July 28. They are not on track to accrue extra salary up until opening day on March 25.
